Hackney and Middlesex Band of Hope purse. The Band of Hope movement worked to teach children the importance of sobriety and took a hard line against alcohol consumption of any amount. Members were required to sign a pledge against drinking upon joining. The Hackney & East Middlesex Band of Hope Union were based in Mare Street, where soirées were held with performances and testimonials to the benefits of abstaining from alcohol.
This type of purse was also known as a 'stocking purse' or 'miser', and consisered a suitable gift for gentlemen in the nineteenth century in which they could store coins and other small objects.
