The Hackney Painting

This painting shows the hands of a DJ from the night club Herbal which used to run on Kingsland Road. Over his hands float the flowers of Paradise Fields, where the Loddiges plant nurseries grew seeds from distant shores. The frame, made from material in a Burberry-style checked print, is a reference to the Burberry factory situated not far from where the flowers grew; a new type of ornament associated, particularly in early 2000s, with street fashion. "This painting is a mesh, a sampling, like the music it refers to. From fragments a wall of sound emerges, and a culture grows”. Margarita Gluzberg, 2006.
