Object history

Allen Road was built in the 1850s as a shopping street for people from nearby areas such as Clerkenwell. It was funded by the British Freehold Land Society, a breakaway Chartist organisation. They aimed to help shopkeepers become property owners so that they could vote and help to broaden representation in Parliament.

When it was first built there were sixty shops or businesses in Allen Road. There were pubs, chandlers, boot makers, a watchmaker and several food and clothing suppliers.

In 1972 Richard Scott photographed the whole length of the north side of Allen Road. These slides have been digitally re-constructed to make a complete panorama.

By 1972 the number of shops and businesses had dropped to less than 40. Chemists, doctors’ surgeries, tailors, a wool shop, a stained glass window manufacturer, newsagents, second-hand furniture shops, and a wet and dry fish shop cooking over wood remained.
