Physical Description
A work appointment diary for 1952 belonging to Dr. Lionel Stoll. An Israeli stamp has been used as a bookmark. Dr. Stoll was born in Lithuania in 1907 to Russian Jewish parents. The family came to Hackney when Lionel was 11. In 1935, he borrowed money from an uncle to start his first practise in Chalk Farm. People flocked to register with a GP in the early days of the NHS, and doctors' workload soared. By the time he was using this dairy, with 3 other doctors in his Camden practice, Dr Stoll was treating 4,000 patients. Patients queued for hours in the waiting room before an appointment system was set up in the 1960s.
