This image is by Hackney photographer Dennis Morris. Morris started photographing his life in Hackney at the age of 8, capturing the everyday experience of the Black British community in 1960s and 1970s London. Morris later came celebrated for his photos of Bob Marley, the Sex Pistols and Marianne Faithful. This image shows a man, woman and girl with three kettles and a paraffin heater. The room is shared by several people, typical of the experience of many Black immigrants on arrival in London. Morris has remarked that "fires were often started by children knocking over paraffin heaters in these cramped conditions. Many children suffered health problems from the smoky heaters."
