Physical Description
Plaque from Clapton Synagogue inscribed with prayers for the British royal family.
Prayers for the royal family were read out every week at the sabbath services, following the advice of the Prophet Jeremiah to the people of Israel when they were about to go into exile (in 580 BCE) that they should always pray for the peace of the country where they would settle. This became a custom throughout the diaspora.
