The First Dub Poet Performing in Hackney, 1980s
Born in Jamaica in 1952, Linton Kwesi Johnson moved to South London as a young child. Most of Johnson’s poetry is political, dealing mainly with the experiences of being African Caribbean in Britain. His performance poetry, including this show in Hackney, involves the recitation of his own verse in Jamaican Patois over dub-reggae. This was usually written in collaboration with renowned British reggae music producer Dennis Bovell.
He went on to work at the Keskidee Centre in Islington, the first home of Black theatre and art in London.
