This portrait of Sarah French is taken in a drawing room "set". It features a number of accessories which were regularly used by Victorian photographers to evoke importance and elegance. In reality, most of Eason's clients were not "high-born" but photographic portraiture at that time appealed to the sitter's social aspirations, rather than reflecting their actual rank and circumstances. Sitters themselves joined in this conspiracy by arriving for their portraits dressed in their best outfits.
