It is possible that Mr and Mrs Oliver arranged to have their portrait taken to celebrate the birthday of their child. Those Victorians who could afford it often took their children to the studios around the time of their birthday, to record their growth and development.
For many Victorians "high street" photographers, photographing baby proved to be the key to a reliable and regular source of income. It was fashionable for families to keep an album with portraits of their offspring until they came of age.
