Victorians believed that how a person stood and held themselves and held themselves in a photograph said a lot about their character and personality.
Although Victorians didn't want to smil in their photographs it wasn't considered desirable to strike a stiff or formal pose.
In this portrait mr Selta directly faces the camera. Such a pose was intended to sugest strength and solidarity. if a siter wanted a more "dignified" and "stern" portrait it was recommended that a photograph be taken of his profile.
