John was the father of Arthur Eason and it was he who started the family photography business in a premises near Charing Cross in 1857. We know little about the nature of the business relationship between father and son when the photography studio moved to Dalston Lane, although all the trade cards found with the Eason collection only have Arthur's name printed on them.
However we do know a great deal about the life of John Eason as he played a key role in the early history of the Salvation Army. His work as a minister at Hackney Mission is well documented.
He did have unusual religious views as he passionately believed that Napoleon was the Antichrist.
He is photographed here in the back garden of the Dalston Lane studio sitting in the window of a rustic style grotto.
