The art of retouching was practiced in photography throughout the 1800s although some thought it was a dodge to conceal poor workmanship and incompetence.
In Eason's day retouching was done on the glass plate negative usually using a soft lead pencil. Sometimes retouching was used to conceal flaws in the photograph such as spots and pinholes. Other times it was used to cover up "flaws" in the sitter such as wrinkles or scars. Eason often retouched his photographs for dramatic effect.
