Children's sailor suits started to become popular in the 1840s because one of Queen Victoria's sons was photographs wearing one.
Because so many parents took their sons to studios dressed in sailor suits, photographers made nautical sets and props. Eason used a masthead accessory for boys to pose on as well as this painted seascape.
