Object history
The Hawri pattern is a fragile,woven and well recognised pattern in the Kurdish community. The red marks represents the sun, fire and poppies. They are all symbols of nature, peace and protection.
Scarves like this were worn by Kurdish women culturally rather than religiously, particularly in the southern area of Turkey and northern Iraq. Many of the older generation wore headscarves and skirts of the same material and pattern. They are also placed on coffins and sometimes used in traditional dances.
