Welcome to the Olympic Park

On 27 July 2012, the eyes of the world will be on this part of London as the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games begin.

More than 200,000 visitors have already been on tours of the Olympic Park since our official tour programme began in 2007 and we hope that you enjoy being a part of it!

In the beginning
The games present a once in a lifetime opportunity to transform the Lower Lea Valley. For the past 400 years, much of the area has been used for heavy industry and since the late 19th century around half of the site has been used for domestic and industrial landfill.

Soil washing machines were used to successfully clean more than 1.4 million cubic metres of contaminated soil on the site, 80 percent of which was reused on the Park.

When the site was handed over to the Olympic Delivery Authority, much of the land had some form of contamination, such as petrol, oil, tar and heavy metals, and the skyline was dominated by 52 electricity pylons that criss crossed the site

52 electricity pylons were dismantled and the power lines moved underground in one of the largest civil engineering projects in recent times.
