Private Fisher in the Battle of Gallipoli / Battle of Çanakkale
Gallipoli (Çanakkale) is in modern-day Turkey but in 1915 it was part of the Ottoman Empire. The Ottomans were fighting alongside Germany. Britain and its allies wanted to knock them out of the war. The plan was to land forces at Gallipoli, move inland and take the capital Constantinople (now Istanbul). The plan did not work and it was seen as a disaster for the British but a victory for the Ottomans.
This medal was awarded to Private William Charles Fisher of the 1/10th (County of London) Battalion (Hackney) for taking part in the Battle of Gallipoli in August 1915.
