The Knights Templar is an international philanthropic chivalric order affiliated with Freemasonry. They had a stronghold in Hackney when they were given land to build their community after being exiled by the Pope 1307. Many people feel that the Templars have long gone but there are still signs of their presence in Hackney. The Hackney home of the Templars was Temple Mills, the site of the 2012 London Olympic Games. The black sash is a Knights Templar sash. The 33 degree pendant is the highest level of masonry.
