Or company, apply to the Country Court, or, if the amount does not exceed £25 and at least fourteen days’ notice of the application has been given to the society or company, to a Court of Summary Jurisdiction for the place where such member or person resides, for a settlement of the dispute.

Alternatively such a dispute may be referred by the consent of both parties to the Industrial Assurance Commissioner; or if the amount involved does not exceed £50, and the legality of the policy is not questioned, and fraud or misrepresentation is not alleged, the matter may be referred to the Commissioner by either party to the dispute without the consent of the other.

Where a doubt arises as to the continued existence of a person whose life is assured, the Commissioner may award that the surrender value be paid to the owner of the policy, and such award shall be a discharge for all claims by or against the society or company in connection with the policy.

Any application to the Commissioner shall be made by letter addressed to him at 17, North Audley Street, London, W.1. NOTICES.

Where any notice is required by the Acts to be served upon any person, the notice must be in writing or in print and must be either delivered or sent by post to him, but a notice of default may be left at his last known place of abode instead of being delivered or sent by post.

NORTHERN IRELAND.

THE EFFECT OF THE CORRESPONDING PROVISIONS OF THE INDUSTRIAL ASSURANCE ACTS (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1924 to 1958 AND THE FRIENDLY SOCIETIES ACTS (NORTHERN IRELAND) 1896 to 1958 AND OF REGULATIONS MADE THEREUNDER is the same as the above except for :-

The substitution of “2nd December, 1958” for “7th September, 1958” and of “31st December, 1924” for “31st December 1923” in the paragraph headed “Limit on Amount” ;
The substitution of “Northern Ireland” for “Great Britain” in paragraph headed “Special form of death certificate”;



The addition of the words “Northern Ireland” before “England” in the first sentence of the second paragraph under the heading “Provisions as to forfeited policies” and



The substitution of “23rd December, 1948” for “30th June, 1948” in the paragraphs headed “Prohibition of assignment” and “Limitation of power to dispute liability”.


Any application to the Industrial Assurance Commissioner for Northern Ireland should be made by letter addressed to him at the Ministry of Commerce, Belfast.
