Hackney resident Gita Sarkar brought this necklace with her as a memento of her father’s shop in Uganda. In 1972 Idi Amin, the leader of Uganda, expelled Asians living in the country. Around 27,000 Ugandan Asian sought refuge in Britain because of their historical connections and many moved to Hackney.
