A pair of Kurdish slipper socks
Object history
These knitted Kurdish socks are made out of sheep wool, which is spun with a spinner. Many Kurdish communities lived in mountainous regions, and a common employment was as shepherds. Socks like these were often made whilst travelling and under harsh weather conditions. If they ripped, they would be mended with new pieces woven into the pattern.
Many from the Halkevi community were reminded of the poverty and hardships they had faced in their previous village life and so seeing this stirred an emotional response. To others, it had reminded them of the long and extreme winters they endured and how the socks had provided warmth and comfort whilst they were hunting.
