Resist Cultural and Political Censorship in Hackney
For the third time, Hackney Council has banned one of our political benefit concerts at short notice, exploiting legal loopholes to close down venues. Usually the council threatens landlords of pubs and venues with fines and court cases the day before a concert is due to happen, making it impossible for the organisers to find an alternative venue. The strategy is to scare off landlords and make it impossible to put on non-commercial gigs. This amounts to a form of censorship. Hackney Council is trying to promote itself as a music-friendly borough by spending millions of pounds on the conversion of Central Hall to a corporate music venue. At the same time, it is cracking down on the already existing vibrant music scene by preventing concerts from happening. Environmental health regulations meant to protect residents from regular noise violations are also increasingly being used to stop one-off community events. In some cases, the rights of one or a few residents are given more weight than the rights of the many people who go to these events. Public Service Announcement has been organising political fundraising events since September last year on a non-sectarian grassroots basis for campaigns such as Asylum Seekers, Reclaim the Streets, McLibel, the Zapatista and Bougainville Liberation Movements, the Advisory Service for Squatters and others. However, over the last few months, our endeavours to organise community events have several times been thwarted by last-minute interference from Hackney Council. NO PASARAN
