Personal experiences

"I learnt to eat 'hot' African food at the age of 14, and African pepper has always played a role in my life. This tin, which once held 200 grams of Enco Product’s “Lagos” brand Machine Ground Chilli Pepper, was purchased by me soon after moving to Stoke Newington in 1982. In the days before the ubiquitous plastic bags of hot pepper, many West African homes would have had a tin in the cupboard.

Enco products, with headquarters in Fortress Road, Kentish Town, started out as a business supplying the Jewish community. When they realised that there was a market for African and African Caribbean products, these were added to their range.”
