Object history

Blue medal box. Interior of blue velvet and cream silk. To hold Normandy Veterans Association Hackney Branch Chairman's medal (2016.01).

The box and medal belonged to Jack Webb (born in Ilford, lived in Highbury), Chairman of the Hackney branch of the Normandy Veterans Association for the last 10 years of its existence and one of the names listed on the back of the medal.

During the Second World War Jack joined the 4th Essex Cadets and was later moved into the Royal Berkshire Regiment. His first action was as infantry at the D-Day landing during the Invasion of Normandy (June 1944). Here they ran out of ammunition and surrendered, becoming a Prisoner of War (POW) in Munich. As a prisoner they were made to clear the rubble from Allied bombings.

The Normandy Veterans’ Association (NVA) is made up of those who took part in the 1944 invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. They organised events, gatherings, and trips to French beaches where the invasion took place.
