Signage from Paintworks art materials shop. Paint (possibly acrylic) on foam board. Image of woman's face speaking into phone and text in a speech bubble.
Arts supplies shop Paintworks opened on the Kingsland Road, Hoxton in 1985. It supported local emerging artists through part-time employment. Former staff have gone on to become some of the best known names in contemporary art.
Staff members decorated the shop with signs promoting the shop’s products and services. These signs show how local artists were influenced by American pop artists, reproducing the famous comic-book imagery of Roy Lichtenstein.
Paintworks closed in July 2016 after rising rents and studio closures saw their artist customers being increasingly priced out of Hackney.
