[Title] Support the junior doctors
[ital:] A junior doctor writes:
'We are under attack. The government is impos-ing a new contract that threatens the future of the NHS. We are not asking for more money. We are fighting for the NHS and all who work and care for it. We are in the front line.'
Junior doctors' rally, 1.00pm, Thursday, 7 April
Hackney Town Hall, Mare Street.
Strike: 6-7 and 26-27 April
[text:] Junior doctors are in the front line of the government's aim to completely smash the welfare state; and teachers are not far behind. For that is what the imposition nof contracts on the doctors, and the transfer of every school in the country to acedemies, is all about.
The Tories are lying when they say they want a 24/7 NHS, for doctors already work every day of the week. The contract removes safeguards on how long doctors work, and cuts their payments for working unsocial hours.
What the government really wants is to lower staff conditions across the NHS in preparation for even more privatisation. It is a ploy that also explains its plan to transfer every school in the country to academies.
It isn't only doctors who are under attack. Student nurses are being threatened witht he removal of burseries and instead having to pay £50,000 for a three-year course - a plan that will inevitably discourage thousands from starting a nursing career when hospi-tals are crying out for them.
Some of Hackney's doctors' surgeries are also facing closure due to funding cuts, and local pharmacies are under attack as the government shifts the dispensing of medicine to giant corporations delivering items by post.
And like almost every hospital trust in the UK, the Homerton is facing a deficit of more than £5m, putting pressure on jobs and inevitably on the standard of care provided across Hackney's NHS.
[subtitle:] The government can be stopped
[text:] The government is weak. The Budget fiasco last month, Ian Duncan Smith's resignation, the declining fortunes of chancellor George Osborne and internal arguments over the EU show what a shambles it has become.
This means junior doctors could force the government to back down from its attack. And teachers too could stop the privatisation of education.
But in order to continue their fight, the doctors need to know the public supports them. Post a message of support to the facebook address below, and make an effort to get to their picket lines at Homerton Hospital on 6-7 and 26-27 April.
