Physical Description

Catalogue of toys, esp. model vehicles. This includes “Matchbox” Superfast models and historic “Models of Yesteryear” collections. There is also an advert for the illustrated book “Mike and Model Makers”.

The cover is illustrated with a full colour hand-made illustration of the different car models which are offered inside the catalogue. It has a red and yellow background and, in the upper part, the name of the brand “Matchbox” written in red and “Superfast” in black. Just under it, Collector’s Catalogue 1970 is written in black with a blue background.

Matchbox is a brand of toys made at Lesney’s factory in Hackney Wick. Leslie Smith and Rodney Smith founded the factory in 1947. The idea behind the small vehicles was that they should be affordable and small enough to fit into a matchbox.

LESNEY 3

“MATCHBOX” TOYS

There was a building so long i could not see the other end. Up on the roof, there was a sign, it was a name i didn’t know, and in the street, a strange coloured bus for London blue. Then suddenly, another blue bus came by and i saw on the side of it — “MATCHBOX”. Lesney means “MATCHBOX”! Now i know what Daddy meant when he was talking about the greatest automobile factory in the world.
