Shortly after becoming President of the United States of America, in January 2017 Donald Trump issued Executive Order 13769 'Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry into the United States'. Popularly known as the ‘Muslim ban’, this banned entry to the United States from seven majority-Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen. After immediate legal challenges the Department of Homeland Security stopped enforcing the order.
In response to the ‘Muslim ban’, more than 1.5 million people signed a petition calling for Prime Minister Theresa May to cancel Trump’s planned state visit to the UK. With 14.16% and 13.31% of the community signing respectively, Hackney South and Shoreditch, and Hackney North and Stoke Newington had the highest proportion of signatories in the country.
