Physical Description
World War II era policeman's hat. Metal, largely rusted particularly around holes. Some painted letters still visible reading 'S.N(?)'. Material through two of the hole and green plastic string tied to a hole in the brim. There is a dent in the top of the helmet.
This helmet was worn by Reginald James Hill who served in the Metropolitan Police Force from the age of 21 until he retired in 1955. He was stationed at the Shepherdess Walk Police Station , Hackney, London N.1. Hill's wife recalled that during the Blitz, policemen would wear their uniform home and Hill would return home covered in dust caused by the bombing.
