Physical Description

Metal pin badge made up of two rectangles and an upside down triangle. The badge is red and silver with cyrillic text and numbers 60 and 1977. There is a vertical lightning bolt symbol on the right hand side.

Object history

This pin badge commemorates the 60th anniversary of the 1917 Russian Revolution in 1977, also known the the October Revolution.

This badge associated with - and probably distributed by - a youth organisation funded and operated by the Communist party of Soviet Russia called the Vladimir Lenin All-Union Pioneers or Young Pioneers. Between 1922 and 1991 children and young adults would participate in Scout-like activities to show allegiance to the Soviet Union.

This badge features the word отряд (otryad), which means detachment or squad, to refer to members attending the same school. Also featured is the word студенческйй (studencheskiy) which refers to a group of students at college or university.

This badge was donated by the former Branch Secretary for Hackney Unison trade union, 1994-1996.
