Object history
This badge represents an honour or title of 'Shock Worker of Communist Labour' given to a worker within the Soviet Union who was an exemplary worker who showed great dedication and productivity, often working over and above set quotas.
The word ударнйк (urdarnik) which translates to 'shock-worker' in English was used to encourage 'superproductivity' and collectivism in the workforce. Awardees would receive a badge, certificate and cash prize. The campaign was most prominent in the 1960s and 1970s.
This badge was donated by the former Branch Secretary for Hackney Unison trade union, 1994-1996.
