Physical Description

A5 red, black and white flyer with capital text in boxes and a grey postcard format on reverse. The pre-written postcard text is about pay rise in line with inflation for key workers in Hackney.

Object history

This flyer acts as a pre-written postcard for Unite the Union supporters and members to send to the Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, to persuade him to enter negotiations in order to increase the pay of Hackney workers in 2022.

In April and May 2022, building, refuse and disability transport services took 6 days of strikes on Thursdays (usually at 1pm) over their 1.75% pay increase offer. At the time, inflation was at 11.1% due to the post-pandemic economy in the UK amongst other crises. This flyer was handed out at those strike days to members of the public and other union members. The flyers can be sent in the post as the reverse side is a postcard.

I BACK HACKNEY WORKERS IN THEIR FIGHT FOR PAY JUSTICE
Dear Mayor of Hackney Philip Glanville,

As the Mayor of Hackney I am sure you agree that the Hackney workers working throughout the pandemic for key services in the community deserve a pay rise. It is not fair that workers are being forced to accept a 1.75% pay offer when inflation is around 10%.

This is a significant pay cut to wages that have stagnated for years. Please do the right thing and ensure that these workers that we rely on for basic services and who have risked their health and that of their loved ones during the pandemic are given a decent pay rise.

Hackney council has £300 million in reserve fun. We ask you to use it to give our key workers a decent pay rise and enter into meaningful negotiations with Unite the Union to end this dispute. You have the power to sort this out.
