Object history
The 'Movement for Colonial Freedom' was founded in 1954 to campaign for the end of British colonial rule in Africa, India and the Caribbean and advocated for their freedom, independency and self-determination. The organisation changed its name to Liberation in 1970, shifting its priorities to economic and social self-determination following many former European colonies achieving political independence.
One of the leadership from its founding was activist Tony Gilbert, who later became the General Secretary of Liberation from the 1980s until his death. Gilbert was active in the Stoke Newington Branch of the Communist Party as well as on the Hackney Borough Council Communist Party Committee.
