Object history
In January 2010, the Hackney Empire was forced to close down for almost a year due to an unstable financial climate. The venue, which is the symbol of Hackney's artistic and cultural vibrancy and played host to the likes of Charlie Chaplin, Stan Laurel, Houdini and many others, was saved from closure once before in 2001. The badge 'Keep the Hackney Empire Open' is associated with the 2009 closure, and the theatre eventually reopened later in the year for its famous pantomime season.
