Object history

The 'Canonbury Ambulance' badge refers to the British ambulance strike that took place around many UK cities between 1989 and 1990. Ambulance crews called the government for a fair pay rise and their campaign received a huge popular support.

Local stations like Hackney, Dalston, Shoreditch and Canonbury organised daily collections in order to pay their weekly salary but many ambulance workers struggled to make ends meet with only strike pay and collection money. 'Thank you' badges like this one were given to the people supporting the workers with donations.

Eventually, in February 1990 a deal was reached between the unions and the Department of Health with a pay rise of 16.9% agreed over two years.
