Object history
The large symbol at the centre of the 'Co-operators For Peace' badge was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958 for the CND (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, 1957-present) and since then it has became the universal symbol for the movement of peace.
In the 1980s, when the badge was produced, the UK government agreed to house American nuclear cruise missiles in a RAF base at Greenham Common (Berkshire), sparking the protests of local women, who set up a permanent camp outside of the military base, the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp.
