Object history
This badge was produced when GLC (Greater London Council) was at risk of being dissolved (1986) and campaigns were taking place in order to protect the Council.
The slogan 'The GLC Works for Women' printed on the badge, recalls the numerous initiatives through which GLC supported the diversity, anti-racist and feminist causes throughout it existence.
'Directly aligning itself with the Women’s Liberation Movement (WLM) and international feminist campaigns like Wages for Housework, the GLC also pledged to support the domestic economy – the heavily feminised, typically unpaid and unacknowledged labour of caregiving and domestic work – by investing heavily in free childcare provision, improving public transport, and campaigning to narrow the gender pay gap' (Brownson, L. 2022).
In addition, GLC established the Women's Committee (1982-1986) which, in its last year, counted 96 members and published 'The London Women's Handbook', 'a compendium of resources, services, community and local government initiatives, and information, all relating to the specific issues and needs of women living and working across London' (Brownson, L. 2022).
