Object history
This badge was worn and owned by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone. The badge is a response to the Falklands War (1982).
Sovereignty over the British overseas territory of the Falkland Islands (Islas Malvinas), located east of the South American coast, had long been contested by Argentina. On the 2 April 1982 Argentine forces invaded to take the islands by force, sparking a conflict lasting 74 days and involving 30,000 members of different armed forces. Although the military action received widespread patriotic support amongst the British public, a significant minority opposed the war.
