Object history
In October 1983, the United States led an invasion of Grenada, following the coup by the Revolutionary Military Council which had seen Grenada’s Prime Minister, Maurice Bishop, arrested and executed. US assistance had been formerly requested by some representatives of the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS), and the resulting military action (Operation Urgent Fury) was part of US president Ronald Reagan’s cold war efforts to counter Soviet and Cuban influence internationally.
Most European nations denounced the violation of international law and of the independence of Grenada by the US. On 2 November 1983, demonstrators in London protested the US invasion with placards reading ‘Hands Off Grenada.’
