Object history
The flag shown on this badge is flown over the Hackney Town Hall each October to mark ‘Black History Month’. It was designed in 2018 by Malaika Parillon Langlais Baron, a 13 year old student of The Urswick School, who won a competition to create the new flag for the borough. Other designs submitted also drew on hair and style for inspiration, for example by featuring iconography from African textiles or an afro-comb.
Speaking of her design, Malaika said “I have African roots and my design is inspired by my own experience of growing within a black community and culture in Hackney.”
