Object history
When Lea View House in Hackney opened in Upper Clapton in 1939 it was nicknamed 'Heaven in Hackney' compared to the slum housing it had replaced. However, by 1980 the block of flats had deteriorated and the estate was seen as somewhere no one would live except as a last resort. In response, the tenants led a successful campaign to get their homes renovated with the council spending £6.5 million to redesign and refurbish the homes with full tenant participation. All the building work was carried out by Hackney Council's own Direct Labour Organisation building workforce. The renovation included garden maisonettes for families, sheltered accommodation for the elderly and the installation of solar heating panels.
