Object history

Hackney Council's anti-racist year was officially launched at Hackney Town Hall 27 April 1985. The year saw a programme of initiatives organised by the council's Race Relations Unit. Speaking at the launch of the year, leader of the council Anthony Kendall emphasised by council's equal opportunities policy, and stated " 'As Hackney's largest employer and provider of services, the Council has a special responsibility to lead the fight against racism. We have therefore set ourselves ambitious targets in recruitment, training, housing, social services, community projects and all other areas of the Council's operation."
