Object history
Smash the Backlash was a demonstration held on 2 May 1987 led by Haringey Black Action and Positive Images, a group created to challenge counter negative views about LGBT+ people. It is credited as being the first UK demonstration highlighting the lives of Black LGBT+ community.
Following the introduction of Section 28, 3,500 people marched through Haringey in support of rights for Lesbians and Gays. Leaflets produced by Haringey Black Action call for solidarity between LGBT+, Asian and Afro-Caribbean people, and express frustration at Black community leaders and organisations attacking homosexuality rather than the real threats to members of these communities.
This badge was owned and worn by Hackney activist Ian Rathbone.
