Council back in court on April 16
DELAYED CRUNCH!!
IN what is rapidly becoming a saga to rival Dallas (guess who's playing JR), Hackney Council survived the courtroom battle with failed SDP candidate Mourad Fleming.

No order of Mandamus was made by the Judge to force a rate to be set. Judge Woolf said: ‘There can be circumstances when it would be proper for a council to defer making a rate after April 1st.’ He added ‘that order will require the council to make a rate as soon as practible in such sum as it considers appropriate.' If he is 'happy' that a rate will be made then the Mandamus order will not be made. What he is asking for is a timetable for setting a rate.

The Council goes back to the High Court in The Strand on April 16 to be given the Judge's full written judgement. Save Hackney Campaign have organised a lobby for 9.30am onwards outside the court, coaches leaving Hackney Town Hall at 9am.

The Policy and Resources Committee meets on April 10 at Hackney Town Hall at 7.30pm and should also be lobbied as councillors consider developments to date.

The full council meets again on April 24, 7.30pm at Hackney Town Hall.

The Labour Group of councillors meets on Thursday, April 11 at 6pm and should also be lobbied and made aware of the opposition against ratecapping.

Inner London MPS, including Hackney's, are due to meet Patrick Jenkin on April 17 to discuss rate-capping. Council leader Hilda Kean says she hopes there will be some response from Jenkin at last.

Hackney is joining with other 'hit list' Labour Councils through the Local Government Information Unit to try to contact Jenkin who refuses to talk direct to Councils ‘We shall be doing this during the week of April 16’ said Deputy Leader Andrew Puddephatt.

The Council has already assured community groups and council workers that money is available after suceesfully getting the ban on borrowing lifted on March 29.
