RATE COULD BE SET ON MAY 21
Showdown at Mare Street Corral!
AN OCCUPATION of Hackney Town Hall by the council unions Joint Shop Stewards Committee last Thursday (May 16) prevented an adjourned meeting of the full council taking place. Alf Sullivan, JSSC Secretary said: ‘We feel that democracy should be carried out, with the opportunity for the Council trade unions and the community to voice their opinions prior to the democratic process taking place.'
The long-arranged council meeting on Tuesday, May 21, at 7.30pm will now consider what action to take to comply with a High Court ruling that a rate must be set by May 31.
‘The mayor has agreed to recommend that a representative of the JSSC be allowed to speak to that meeting' said Council leader, Hilda Kean. If groups want to ensure their funding is going to continue, May 21 is possibly the last time our views can be made at a rally at 4.30pm at London Fields and from 6pm outside Hackney Town Hall. Save Hackney Campaign leaflets are enclosed in this mailing for distribution. There will be a banner display outside the town hall on May 21. You can drop off banners at the Porters Lodge Monday or Tuesday morning.
In the Labour Group of councillors elections on Monday night, new councillor Phil Stott replaced Cllr Chris Spencer as chair of Community Development Committee. More details next week.
