Object history

When the owners hydraulic motors manufacturers Staffa Products Ltd. in Leyton decided to close the plant and relocate it in Plymouth with the aid of a Government grant and the loss of-over 300 local jobs.

This resulted in an occupation of the factory by 250 workers for around 19 days, which was ended on the 17 October 1981 by a force of 300 police entering the factory. The Hackney People's Press, covering the dispute, called for people to support the strikers, saying “The Staffa dispute is the first real fightback over jobs in London for six years and is important to all who live and work in London and whose jobs may also be at risk if the company succeed with their plan.”
