Breaking The Silence book, writing by Asian Women. The book is aqua blue and has a black and white picture of two women sharing a meal. The book's title is also translated into various other South Asian languages.
Object history
Breaking the Silence is a book which comprises of the writings of various South Asian women who are silenced, either by society or their families. The project initially started with Dalston's Children Centre, and then joined with Centerprise to edit and publish this book.
Centerprise (1971-2012) was a community centre in Dalston. They were originally at 32 Dalston Lane and later moved to 136-138 Kingsland Road. They hosted a bookshop, reading centre, cafe, youth club, and a publishing project where people and groups could publish their writings.
Dalston Children's Centre (1979 - ~2000) was set up by a group of women in Hackney and provided facilities for women and children. They were based at various locations including 80 Sandringham Road, 112 Greenwood Road (near Dalston Lane) and from 1985 - 76 Shacklewell Ln, London E8 2EY
