WILL MEAN
New Police Powers
To stop and search you on the streets if the police
think you look suspicious, i.e. on 'reasonable
suspicion'.
To set up roadblocks and carry out random checks
for indefinite periods for certain purposes.
To arrest people for any offence, including a minor
one such as littering or parking, if for example their
names and addresses cannot be established.
To search under warrant homes and premises of
people not suspected of committing an offence.
To seize evidence of any offence compulsorily
during search of premises.
To compulsorily fingerprint people with criminal
offences which will be on national police records.
To use compulsion to take fingerprints and body
samples and carry out intimate body searches of
suspects detained in the police station.
To detain certain suspects in police stations for
questioning for up to four days without charge on the
authority of magistrates' warrants
To obtain warrants for access to the confidential
files of professionals, such as doctors, social workers
and probation officers
To deny access of suspects detained in police
stations to solicitors for up to 48 hours.
