From the 2024 exhibition 'Making Carnival':

In 1997, Centerprise, a community bookshop in Dalston, worked with local carnival groups and Hackney Council to start Mare De Gras. It was a community celebration to mark the European Year Against Racism.

The founders of Mare de Gras wanted to create a celebration inspired by Notting Hill Carnival. Based around Mare Street, the name ‘Mare De Gras’ was a pun of the Lent carnival Mardi Gras.

The procession started at Hackney Downs Park and ended at Hackney Town Hall. By the early 2000s the event had grown to a wide local audience, who came to support the bands on the road.
