Object history
In 2020, an audit of plaques, street and building names was carried out, which identified five names considered symbolic of racist histories. One of the figures identified was Sir Robert Aske (1619-1689), an investor in the Royal African Company, an organisation that was responsible for the trading of slaves from West Africa.
In September 2023 Aske Gardens was renamed to Joe White Gardens, named after Joe White (1962-2002), a successful basketball player and youth coach from the 1980s who was raised in Hackney. Joe represented Team GB before becoming one of the most successful youth basketball coaches in history.
