A red, yellow and green scarf with tassels.

Object history

The scarf is usually worn during the Kurdish spring festival, Newroz with the colours representing the four regions of Kurdistan: Bakur,Başûr, Rojhilat and Rojava. The pattern of the scarf is originally of Arab origin however the colours are from the Kurdistan flag. The scarf is worn differently depending on what region you are in. In some places, the colours are worn by the bride and groom. For many, this scarf has become a symbol for Kurdish action, identity and heritage. The red, yellow and green are colours of political resistance as they are banned in many parts of Turkey, if worn as a scarf or a piece of clothing.
This scarf was collected by Hackney staff on the 22nd of March 2026 at the Newroz festival which takes place in Finsbury Park annually. This festival is a way for the surrounding boroughs to show their recognition to the North London Kurdish community and to strengthen the community.
